Understanding Neurodivergent Perception

Most of us grew up learning about the “five senses”: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Simple. Neat. Easy to memorise for a school test.
But for neurodivergent people, particularly those with ADHD or Autism, lived experience tells a very different story.

Neurodivergent perception involves a much broader sensory landscape. One where internal and external signals can feel amplified, muted, or wildly out of sync. For some, sensory input hums quietly in the background. For others, it’s a full-blown nightclub in the nervous system. This isn’t a flaw — it’s a different sensory interface with the world.

Beyond the Five Senses: The Full Sensory System

In addition to the familiar senses, the human body relies on several “hidden” systems that play a major role in sensory regulation for neurodivergent people.

  • Proprioception (body awareness): Knowing where your body is in space

  • Interoception (internal awareness): Hunger, thirst, emotions, fatigue

  • Vestibular (balance and movement): Motion, coordination, orientation

  • Auditory & tactile processing: How sound and touch are experienced, not just detected

  • Thermoception, nociception & time awareness: Temperature, pain, and sense of time

When these systems are under- or over-responsive, everyday life can feel overwhelming, disconnected, or exhausting. But when understood and supported, they often become sources of creativity, intuition, physical intelligence, and deep emotional insight.

For neurotypical nervous systems, most sensory input fades into the background unless something goes wrong.
For neurodivergent nervous systems, those signals are often louder, sharper, or harder to filter.

  • Build regulation into routines: Before overwhelm hits, not after

  • Reframe intensity as information: Sensory sensitivity often comes with heightened perception, pattern recognition, and creativity

These aren’t “coping strategies”, they’re intelligent adaptations that support autonomy and capacity.
